Pipe plugs limit the flow of water or gas, so it’s forced to go in a specific direction. There are actually multiple types of pipe plugs that function somewhat differently than the other. Square Plugs

A square plug is one of those mechanical pipeline plugs that are used for a variety of purposes. These are used in many pipeline plug accessories. You mainly see them in things such as appliances and pipelines. These plugs are primarily made out of materials, like plastic, rubber, stainless steel, and aluminum.

With regards to the plastic version of pipeline plugs, these can also be used as pneumatic plugs. This means the plug seals off the ends of a pipe. To tighten square plugs, you’ll need to use specific pipeline plug tools to fasten them, namely an allen wrench.

Hex Plugs

The next type of pipe plug on the list is hex plugs. These plugs are similar to traditional pipeline plugs where the end of it is threaded. Hex plugs are essentially the go-to pipe plug because they’re the most cost-effective. Hex plugs are incredibly resistant to corrosion, if the material it’s made out of is chrome or nickel. Speaking of materials, hex plugs are also made of brass, copper, and stainless steel.

Hollow Plugs

The last type of pipe plug is a hollow plug. Hollow plugs are smaller than the average pipe plug, but are actually very efficient at restricting a gas or water flow. Similar to square plugs, they can be made with aluminum, rubber, plastic, and stainless steel materials. These plugs are also extremely durable as they can withstand a pressure up to 1000 psi.
